In Singapore, one will hardly see or find beggars lining the streets or starving children walking on pavements, scrounging for food. Instead, the poor and needy in our society struggle with the poverty of their financial recourses falling considerably below the amount needed to pay for the necessities of living in Singapore.
The picture above is an example of poverty in Singapore. The picture depicts a run-down and not furnished room which has a stack of old and filthy mattresses and pillows. One mattress and blanket is also lying on the floor. the family living in this flat has a capacity of 7 members, with 5 children and their parents, which can also be told by looking at the number of mattresses and pillows. It is evident that the family is not well to do as their living condition is bad.
This picture is another example of poverty. A man is stretching his hand into the rubbish bin to search for things. He is probably searching for the rubbish that people threw away and wanting to sell them for a living as he brought along to big bag to put the collected rubbish inside.
The poor and needy struggle to survive on an everyday basis due to factors which include health and family issues. Because of the lack of interaction and access to knowledge and educational support, the children of these parents will not be able to outperform their parents in terms of education. Thus, they are unable to make a better live for themselves and their family. This will result in a poverty cycle.
